Portland/New Jersey Orbital
This project started with the question: How can I navigate the city of Portland, ME differently? The New Jersey Turnpike was the starting point for my journey north and became the starting point for negotiating Portland.
Steps:
1) Modulate a map of New Jersey Turnpike by tranforming it from a linear roadway into an orbital.
2) Reduce the scale of the newly transformed Orbital Turnpike and overlay it onto a map of the City of Portland.
3) Walk Portland following the new Orbital Turnpike route through the city.
4) During the walk, at every point on the map that corresponds to an exit on the Turnpike, take one soil sample with a hand auger.
5) Fill 2" diamter acrylic tubes the soil samples.
6) Arrange soil sample tubes in the orbital form.
7) As a chance operation, drop tubes from an upright position starting with the first tube collected (Exit 1) to compose an emergent sculptural form.
